CMIS — common management

CMIS, the Common Management Interface Specification, is a management model that is independent of form factor. One specification covers QSFP-DD, OSFP, COBO and CMIS-capable QSFP modules. It began in the QSFP-DD MSA and is now maintained at the OIF; CodingBox works with CMIS 4.0 and 5.0.

Memory model

Like SFF-8636, CMIS uses a two-wire interface with paged memory:

  • Lower memory (bytes 0–127) is always accessible and holds identity basics,

status and the controls used most often.

  • Upper memory (bytes 128–255) is paged, and pages are grouped into banks to

address the many lanes of high-density modules.

Beyond a flat map

CMIS adds structure that older SFF specs do not:

  • A module state machine — the module moves through defined states (for example

low-power, then high-power, then ready) that the host manages.

  • The CDB (Command Data Block) — a message interface for extended operations such

as firmware management, rather than reading and writing fixed registers only.

For a CMIS module, CodingBox applies the CMIS layout so identity, per-lane diagnostics and configuration are decoded correctly, and it presents the pages in the EEPROM editor. Codes are resolved through the SFF-8024 tables.
